In the Fall of 2009, Holloman AFB was chosen as one of the three candidate bases to possibly become a training site for Active Duty F-35A training. The other two Active Duty Air Force bases in consideration are Eglin FB, Florida and Luke AFB, Arizona. Public scoping meetings will be conducted in the first months of 2010 with a decision expected in late Spring of 2010.
Among the criteria used in the decision were:
- Airspace
- Military flight training ranges
- Weather
- Support facilities
- Runways
- Taxi ramps
- Environmental concerns
- Cost factors
- Military judgement factors
There isn't much that the local community can do about the first 6 factors. However, there is much that can be done by local citizens, community organizations, local businesses and local governments concerning many aspects of the last three factors.
In 2010, the Alamogordo Forum is concentrating on the three issues that the Air Force has identified as what they desire from the local community:
1. Quality of Life
Adequate Housing - Rental & Purchase
Beautification of the City of Alamogordo
More restaurants - Made more by changing the NM law to permit more affordable liquor licenses for restaurants (Click here for more info.)
Increased sources of water
2. Education
Quality education at all levels
Availability of education at all levels (Click her for more info.)
3. Public Acceptance of Jet Noise
Sonic booms from the F-22 (Click here for more info)
Maintain lack of encroachment to Holloman AFB (Click here for more info.)
